Australian Institute of Marine science (AIMS) Seawater Simulator Expansion
Cape Cleveland, Townsville
Hutchinsons Builders
2023/2024
The National Sea Simulator (SeaSim) at the Australian Institute of Marine Science is a world-class marine experimental research facility with advanced capabilities allowing researchers to precisely control water quality parameters such as temperature, pH, salinity, light, and water chemistry, enabling researchers to simulate various scenarios and examine the responses of marine organisms to environmental change. SeaSim is currently undergoing a crucial expansion enabled by a $36m investment from the National Collaborative Research Infrastructure Strategy (NCRIS) through the Department of Education. Approximately 75 tonne of steel was used on this outdoor expansion project. We were commissioned on behalf of Hutchinson Builders to fabricate and install the structural steel to help build the SeaSim expansion. This included a 42m x 32m building which houses several large seawater experimental systems as part of the external open plan experimental area. Additionally, a seawater processing facility, marine operations substation, drum filter platform, diesel generator shed, environment room, cooling tower and access platform extension have been built.
